The findings of a British Columbia study to be published in the October 2014 Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology showed a connection between taking risperidone, which goes by the brand-name antipsychotic Risperdal, and the development of female-like breasts in males.
The irony is that this study centered on the risk in middle-age and older men, not adolescents. Researchers studied thousands of medical records from 2001 to 2011 in men ages 40 to 85.
Generally, the Risperdal lawsuits that have been filed in the U.S. center on the development of breasts in far younger males. And there is science backing their claims as well.
The Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology in its December 2012 issue revealed a study that focused on adolescents and men, ages 10-20, who were taking the Johnson & Johnson antipsychotic. Researchers discovered that hyperprolactinemia, or excess prolactin, “is a common side effect in young males treated over the long term with risperidone.” Elevated prolactin can lead to male breast enlargement, called gynecomastia.
Most of those Risperdal lawsuits are being adjudicated by a state court in Philadelphia, where Risperdal victims can still file suit. The victims are young. But, this latest study may help to push open the door of Risperdal litigation for older males who used the drug and who since experienced ridiculous breast enlargement.
Sometimes surgery is required to reverse the effects. Considerable emotional setbacks can result.
Males who used Risperdal and who developed female-like breasts deserve compensation for their injuries. One way to see that justice is served is to consult, at no charge, an experienced member of Risperdal Litigation Team at Reich & Binstock.
